Causes of Brain Injuries

Upstate New York Brain Injury Lawyers

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1.5 million Americans suffer traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in any given year. Of these injuries, more than 50,000 people die from the injuries, and more than 85,000 suffer long-term disabilities as a result. If you or a loved one has suffered TBI due to another’s negligence, it is important to work with a skilled lawyer. The Albany TBI lawyers of Law offices of Sanford Rosenblum have served many seriously injured individuals across New York. Each of my lawyers brings more than 25 years of legal experience to the practice of law.

The Causes of Brain Injuries

Brain injuries can be caused by any number of traumatic events. According to the CDC, more than one-third (35.2 percent) of traumatic brain injuries are caused by falls. Falls account for more than half of TBIs for children 14 and younger, and for more than 60 percent of TBIs for people 65 and older. Another common cause of TBIs is motor vehicle accidents. Motor vehicle accidents cause more than 17 percent of all brain injuries. Motor vehicle accidents also account for nearly one-third (31.8 percent) of TBI-related deaths. Collisions with a moving or stationary object account for more than 16 percent of brain injuries. Assaults cause more than 10 percent of brain injuries.

Traumatic brain injuries are often caused by blunt force trauma. Some injuries, however, are a result of rapid acceleration and deceleration, causing the brain to strike the inside of the skull. It is not necessary to strike your head to have a TBI.

However your brain injury was caused, it is important that you have a dedicated, knowledgeable lawyer at your side. One of my attorneys, Michael Kessler, has been named Chairman-Elect of the Traumatic Brain Injury Litigation Group of the American Association for Justice. This is a select group of attorneys across the United States who specialize in helping the victims of TBI. Mr. Kessler is regularly invited to lecture on this topic. He has given lectures about traumatic brain injury in places such as Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, NYU Medical Center, the North American Brain Injury Society, the Brain Injury Society of New York State and the New York Academy of Trial Lawyers.
